THE TOILETS

As always, toilets in far away places are always interesting. I can’t for the life of me understand why the Japanese Style toilets (i.e. no toilet bowl, hole in the floor style) still abound. Public toilets in Japan usually consist of 10 Japanese Style toilets and 2 Western Style. Apparently the Japanese Style toilets originated because girls in kimonos usually wore nothing underneath and could simply squat over the bowl in the floor. Most of the Western Style toilets we came across were quite elaborate with buttons for all sorts of tasks to assist in one’s hygiene. I did have fun trying out all the buttons in one of our hotels and wondered why such a handy item hasn’t caught on in Australia. Could be the drought?
