TO FISH OR NOT TO FISH

Updated: Jan 14, 2022

I live in West Lakes, South Australia. My sister does too, but her house has lake frontage and wonderful scenery featuring fish, pelicans, seagulls and the odd duck or two. She and her partner have been known to feed the fish and the birdlife, and so the fish in her neck of the woods are regarded as 'pets'.

I, on the other hand, have developed a new hobby - FISHING.

With this beautiful lake so close by with numerous fishing spots, it is hard to not be tempted to try one's hand at fishing. I was kind of alone in my enthusiasm for this hobby, I must say. Even my partner lacked the necessary drive to give it a go. I bought a hand reel for $2.99 at Kmart pre-rigged up with a line, hook and sinker. I bought some luminous lures as well. I decided that lures might be best as bait tends to fall off the hook, and I had watched some YouTube videos of people catching rather large mullet, mulloway and salmon in the same lake.

My partner and I have now been fishing four times after dinner until sunset (that is, I do the fishing while he phones a friend or plays solitaire on his phone), but I have to report that I haven't had one single nibble. I'm even getting to be an expert in casting a line. I am going to try a new spot tonight and I've added another hook to use with proper bait (actually it is a piece of meat leftover from last night's dinner).

Once again, I'll keep you posted.

Well, it is now the next day and my new fishing spot was more successful, with regard to nibbles. Had lots of nibbles on the meat, but only from tiny fish nibbling away at the bait. Their mouths were not big enough to fit the hook. It's progress though.......
